In choosing a sink or wash hand basin for your bathroom there are several points to consider, such as bathroom size, sink usability and sink position. Pedestal sinks have amassed impressive popularity over the last few years due to their practical and space-saving design. There are countless varieties on offer to fit every need and budget.

As with any bathroom sink, pedestal sinks must be secured to the wall on which they are mounted. The pedestal, usually ceramic, is then placed beneath the sink and is fixed to the wall, the floor, the sink itself, or a combination of the aforementioned. The pedestal gives an antique look to the bathroom, which is ironically a modern thing to do.

As well as it’s eye-pleasing attributes; the pedestal offers mechanical support for the sink. The benefit of this becomes obvious where only a non-structural wall/plasterboard partition is available to mount it. Support from beneath would then be essential, otherwise filling the sink with water or leaning on it would pose a risk of collapse. Alternatives do exist where strong walls are unavailable, such as vanity units or bathroom countertops, but where they too are impractical or undesirable, the pedestal sink is the sink of choice.

Yet another advantage of the pedestal is it can be used to hide vertical pipework feeding the taps.

Available Styles & Colours:

Columns and pedestals now come in a range of styles and colours, not just the typical bathroom-china-white. If antique simply does not cut it for you contoured and textured pedestals are also available like miniature columns of great Athenian monuments.

Shape is no longer limited to the conventional round or rectangular so whatever shape you have in mind you will be able to find it.

Some Disadvantages:

Unfortunately, pedestal sinks are relatively small, with the average sink size only 55 to 65 centimetres wide. As sink width increases, stability reduces, but there are always means of securing the sink top and pedestal to the surrounding walls and floor if this type of sink is the type you want.
