When thinking about decorating the bathroom, most people consider the usual means of renovation such as painting walls and windowsills, re-flooring, tiling, or purchasing new bathroom equipment like accessories, taps or for those with a little extra cash and time, new sanitaryware. These are all effective means of giving new life to an otherwise “dead” bathroom, but one can also make psychological enhancements as well as physical ones. One such example is chromotherapy lighting.

It is possible to enhance the bathroom environment by including a spectrum of dramatic colour, from soothing to stimulating, using lighting. Some bathtubs come with in-built chromotherapy lighting, but if purchasing a new tub is out of the question, the same effect may be achieved using individual independent light fittings capable of cycling through the various colours.

A Little History

The history of colour and its use in healing practices goes back as far as ancient Egypt, possibly even further. Colour therapy, or Chromotherapy, is often facilitated in the healing rooms of alternative health practitioners.

A therapist trained in colour therapy uses colour to balance energy. Some approach this from a psychological angle, others from a spiritual angle but the tools used in colour therapy are generally the same and include gemstones, candles, wands, prisms, coloured fabrics, bathing treatments, and coloured eye-wear i.e. glasses with coloured lenses.

Dr. Max Lûscher devoted his life to studying how colour affects behaviour and has been hired by some of the world's largest companies as a consultant. From years of research by Lûscher and other leading colour psychologists, the characteristics of certain colours have been found to cause emotional responses in people.
